I’m very happy to announce that I’ll be playing the North Sea Festival again, and it’s going to be something really special! First of all the whole concert will be a tribute to the late and great Boy Edgar, who had his own fabulous bigband a couple of decades ago in the Netherlands. His music and his way of working were very special, so it’s a great challenge to honour him in this way with the Konrad Koselleck Big Band.
Secondary there will be some former band member joining us in this concert, out of which one is JOHN ENGELS! John is of course known for all the great artists he played with (f.e. the legendary Chet Baker in Tokio concert), but also for being an incredible drummer still now a days. And the good thing for me is that we get to play together! Boy Edgar did recordings with two drummers in the band (as did the Clarke-Boland band) and we’ll have that too: John and me! So you must come and check it out, ‘cause we’ll be killing it!
Next month the Young Vips tour 2016 will start, which I’m am playing with the great band VinnieVibes. The tour will take us through all of theNetherlands, and we’re sharing the stage with Rogier Telderman Trio, the other winner of the Young Vips price. Along with playing this tour comes the release of VORTEX, the new album by VinnieVibes. Vincent Houdijk, the leader and founder of the band, composed some new music which we recorded live at Paradox (Tilburg) last year. That recording has been mixed and mastered, and we’ll bring it along on this tour. So come and check us out:
As most of you know I’m quite busy with the ‘Starman’ tour of Sven Ratzke, where we use the music of David Bowie and play it in our own way. So you must understand that it came as quite a shock to us (and the rest of the world) that he passed away recently – such a legend, such an authentic person and inspiring figure. This tragic event made playing his music even more special, and we were asked to honour David Bowie in the Dutch tv-broadcast called RTL Late Night. Of course we were happy to do that, so here it is with great respect for mr. Bowie:
This year Vincent Houdijk with his group VinnieVibes (where I’m part of) has been selected to be the Young Vip of 2016! Together with the other vip, Rogier Telderman, he will do a tour along all of Hollands greatest jazz venues (Bimhuis, Lantaren Venster, Paradox and many others).
In the meantime VinnieVibes recorded a new live album at Paradox – Tilburg, and that album called VORTEX will be released during this tour. So check out my agenda, or the VinnieVibes website for more information and come out and see us during the tour! The musicians in the band are: Vincent Houdijk (vibes), Floris van der Vlught (saxes), Aron Raams (guitar), Sven Happel (bas) and yours truly on drums.
That’s gonna be a special concert! To celebrate the birth date of Boy Edgar a hundred years ago (the great dutch Big Band leader) we’ll play a tribute to the band with the Konrad Koselleck Big Band and the David Kweksilber Band. Edgar was very much know for his ability to create space in his arrangements for improvisation, something Koselleck and Kweksilber are known for too.
On top of that some of the original band members are going to join us, among whom the very very great John Engels! He was the drummer in the Edgar Big Band, and although everybody knows John for his combo playing – you should hear him kick ass in this band! So this one is a definate ‘be there or be irreversibly square’ (November 15th):
It’s been a busy summer! Three whole months we’ve been rehearsing and editing the new Sven Ratzke show STARMAN, with the music of David Bowie. Of course we renewed all the tunes (beautiful arrangements by Charly Zastrau), but to be shure it would be a terrific show we spent a lot of time in making everything perfect.
So now there’s a cd and a tour! The cd is available at www.bol.com and in the web shop of Ratzke. There you’ll find the tourlist too, and you’ll find that it takes us not only top to bottom through Holland, but also to Berlin, Hamburg and Vienna, and to the biggest theatre festival of Australia and we’ll play New York for 10 days! So if you want to check us out, have a look at the list and find you’re nearest stage to see us perform. The reviews until now have been blowing us away..
Finally it’s out! Robbert Scherpenisse’s debut cd ‘Searching for Ai’. Robbert wrote all the tunes, he arranged them and got the finest players to perform them – and now everybody can hear it on this great cd.
People features on this album are Jesse van Ruller (guitar), Jeroen Vierdag (bass), me on drums and Miguel Boelens (sax). But also there’s a complete horn section in some tunes, and a couple of beautiful string arrangements. Definitely worth listening to, or join us at the release-concert at the Bimhuis april 18th!
Last time we played Sven Ratzke’s and Claron McFadden’s Groschenblues is a while ago at the Concertgebouw Amsterdam. Luckily the great music of Kurt Weill and lyrics of Bertolt Brecht are requested on several stages once in a while, and so we could play the piece this week in Berlin, at the Tipi am Kanzlerambt. We had a great time at this beautiful venue – and the audience loved it! Charly Zastrau did a great job arranging all the pieces, Sven is an incredible performer and Claron’s magical voice makes the songs sound even better. Check out the (German) review here if you want to know more..
On one of the recent Konrad Koselleck Bigband gigs at the Bimhuis I was asked to perform a piece that had to do with a barbershop (!). The thing was that the founding of the original Bimhuis started at that place in the seventies, when there was a cafe on that address. So we went there, filmed the place (my brother Botte Jellema) and I recorded all the sounds with my Zoom. After a lot of cutting (audio that is ;-)) and editing I made a groove and improvised the rest live at the gig. If you’re up for it, check it out here. Enjoy!
