New album ‘Balanced Action’

This year I’m playing on the new album by Willem Hellbreker called ‘Balanced Action’. Together with the great Johan Clement, with whom I got to play for the first time, and my pal Jasper Somsen on double bass. The album contains a lot of originals by Willem, and some standards along with that. We got some great reviews already, and the albums sounds really nice!

Check it out and find some more info here!

Ratzke’s Christmas Night

The month of December we’re touring the Netherlands with Ratzke’s Christmas Show. Is there anything better than to spend a musical night in the theatre around Christmas with somebody who’s rather with his audience than at home around those days?! In every town there’s a special guest, from Eric Vloeimans and Claron McFadden to Lavinia Meijer and Freek de Jonge. The rest of the show is a musical journey through all of Ratzke-land, together with his band and Fay Lovsky. Come and join us in:

Utrecht – Eindhoven – Den Haag – Nijmegen – Arnhem – Amsterdam

New look

So, I just refreshed the looks of this website a bit – about time most of you would probably say 🙂 While in the meantime it’s so easy to do so with WordPress. Anyway, also some of the content got updated, and I’ll fix some more in the coming time. Let me know what you think!

So many projects..

Hello there! Glad you came to visit this site and see what’s going on. Let me give you an update of what’s happening:

First of all I finished off some great events in the last couple of months – the North Sea Jazz Festival was amazing, super audience and still one of the best festivals to be playing at. Also the Young Vips Tour with VinnieVibes is finished and was a great succes in all ten venues we played. From this tour the cd is still available, check Vincent’s website for that.

Not finished, but visited a lot is Starman! The show of Sven Ratzke (in which I’m playing drums) has gone around the world the last couple of months and continues to do so. We did a big tour in Australia with venues in Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide (Cabaret Festival) and Perth, and had the most amazing reviews and responds over there. Lots of warmth Down Under! But not everything was that far away, we did a month of Edinburgh Festival (around 50 performances in one month!), got recorded by BBC television, travelled to Berlin and other places in Germany, had a tv-recording in the south (Saarländischer Rundfunk), and many many more. Starman continues for another year, but I’ll tell you more about that later. As I will do for all other things happening in the future, so keep visiting this website to stay up to date (or check the agenda for upcoming gigs)!

North Sea Jazz 2016

I’m very happy to announce that I’ll be playing the North Sea Festival again, and it’s going to be something really special! First of all the whole concert will be a tribute to the late and great Boy Edgar, who had his own fabulous bigband a couple of decades ago in the Netherlands. His music and his way of working were very special, so it’s a great challenge to honour him in this way with the Konrad Koselleck Big Band.

Secondary there will be some former band member joining us in this concert, out of which one is JOHN ENGELS! John is of course known for all the great artists he played with (f.e. the legendary Chet Baker in Tokio concert), but also for being an incredible drummer still now a days. And the good thing for me is that we get to play together! Boy Edgar did recordings with two drummers in the band (as did the Clarke-Boland band) and we’ll have that too: John and me! So you must come and check it out, ‘cause we’ll be killing it!

Young Vips tour about to start

Next month the Young Vips tour 2016 will start, which I’m am playing with the great band VinnieVibes. The tour will take us through all of the Netherlands, and we’re sharing the stage with Rogier Telderman Trio, the other winner of the Young Vips price. Along with playing this tour comes the release of VORTEX, the new album by VinnieVibes. Vincent Houdijk, the leader and founder of the band, composed some new music which we recorded live at Paradox (Tilburg) last year. That recording has been mixed and mastered, and we’ll bring it along on this tour. So come and check us out:

  • tourschedule and more info here
  • new album VORTEX available here

Honouring Bowie

As most of you know I’m quite busy with the ‘Starman’ tour of Sven Ratzke, where we use the music of David Bowie and play it in our own way. So you must understand that it came as quite a shock to us (and the rest of the world) that he passed away recently – such a legend, such an authentic person and inspiring figure. This tragic event made playing his music even more special, and we were asked to honour David Bowie in the Dutch tv-broadcast called RTL Late Night. Of course we were happy to do that, so here it is with great respect for mr. Bowie:

Young Vips 2016

This year Vincent Houdijk with his group VinnieVibes (where I’m part of) has been selected to be the Young Vip of 2016! Together with the other vip, Rogier Telderman, he will do a tour along all of Hollands greatest jazz venues (Bimhuis, Lantaren Venster, Paradox and many others).

In the meantime VinnieVibes recorded a new live album at Paradox – Tilburg, and that album called VORTEX will be released during this tour. So check out my agenda, or the VinnieVibes website for more information and come out and see us during the tour! The musicians in the band are: Vincent Houdijk (vibes), Floris van der Vlught (saxes), Aron Raams (guitar), Sven Happel (bas) and yours truly on drums.

100 years Boy Edgar at the Bimhuis

That’s gonna be a special concert! To celebrate the birth date of Boy Edgar a hundred years ago (the great dutch Big Band leader) we’ll play a tribute to the band with the Konrad Koselleck Big Band and the David Kweksilber Band. Edgar was very much know for his ability to create space in his arrangements for improvisation, something Koselleck and Kweksilber are known for too.

On top of that some of the original band members are going to join us, among whom the very very great John Engels! He was the drummer in the Edgar Big Band, and although everybody knows John for his combo playing – you should hear him kick ass in this band! So this one is a definate ‘be there or be irreversibly square’ (November 15th):
